Research rationale:
The Ministry of Public Health has provided all pregnant women with iodine tablets since 1st October 2010 to prevent and eliminate iodine deficiency disorder. There are 2 types of iodine tablets which produced by Government Pharmaceutical Organization as follows:

1. Triferdine 150 for general pregnant women that one tablet contains 150 µg iodine, iron 60.81 mg (in form of ferrous fumarate 185 mg) and folate 400 µg.
2. Iodine GPO150 for pregnant women who are thalassemia that one tablet contains 150 µg iodine.

However, the survey of the Bureau of Nutrition, Department of Health showed that median urinary iodine concentration among pregnant women at first antenatal care in hospitals of Chiang Mai during 2010-2012 were 292.3 µg/l , 171.9 µg/l and 120.8 µg/l, respectively. It revealed that there were still insufficient iodine intake in pregnant women of Chiang Mai. In addition, Chiang Mai has variety in nationality including diversity in food consumption, society, education and belief. Furthermore, Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai hospital has not provided iodine tablets to all pregnant women. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the urinary iodine concentration of pregnant women who attend the antenatal care of Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai hospital to evaluate dietary iodine intake in each trimester of pregnancy.
