Research period:    October 2013- December 2014

Research rationale:
Due to the policy of Ministry of Public Health since 2002, HIV patients can access free antiretroviral drugs. However, a number of patients who received such drugs got some side effects which were lipodystrophy, and/or metabolic abnormalities such as insulin resistance, abnormal lipid profiles and hypertension. Those side effects could be a risk of cardiovascular disease in the long term.  It would be useful to HIV patients if we had knowledge of metabolic abnormalities coexistence causes such as dietary consumption factor including possible prevention or solution of those abnormalities.
This study aimed to determine the results of adjusting the food consumption in HIV patients who had lipodystrophy and high triglyceride. Those HIV patients were asked to have moderately low carbohydrate diets for 3 months and the following parameters were monitored:

1.  Triglyceride and HDL cholesterol
2.  Blood sugar, total cholesterol and blood pressure
3.  Anthropometry and body mass index
