Epidemiology Study: Prevalence & Incidence Study

Study Population :
Patients who had joined a treatment at Chiang Mai Drug Dependence Treatment Center during 1 June 1998 – 31 May 1999. They were followed up by both active and passive approach for 2 years until 31 May 2000 ; 2 follow up visits every 3 months and 3 follow up visits every 6 months.

Study objectives :
1. To study the prevalence and risk factors for HIV infection among opiate dependent users
2. To study the subtypes of HIV virus among opiate dependent users in Northern Thailand
3. To study the incidence and risk factors of HIV-1 infection among opiate dependent users in Northern Thailand by enrolling HIV- participants or free of HIV antibody when joining the treatment at Chiang Mai Drug Dependence Treatment Center and studying HIV risk factors during 2-year follow-up.

Persons

15.6% of drug users are HIV infected; 35.2% of them are injection drug users and 2.8% are inhalant users.

Before leaving Chiang Mai Drug Dependence Treatment Center, 1,905 HIV – participants from Prevalence Phase were willing to be followed up at home or appointed place. Among1,209 participants, 847 came to the first followed up visit, 3 months later.
